Zaragoza is the capital city of the Zaragoza province in the autonomous community of Aragon. It is located on the banks of the Ebro river and its tributaries, Huerva and Gállego, in an environmentally diverse valley. The area has a desert (Los Monegros), meadows, mountains and forests. Its privileged geographical position has caused the city to become a crossroads between Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Bilbao and Toulouse (in France); all of which are located about 300 kms from Zaragoza.

Aragon is the fourth (out of seventeen) largest region of Spain and makes up a tenth of the whole area of Spain. It has a population of some one and quarter million, but at a very low density (24 compared to the national average of 76 a square kilometre).

The region is an important central gateway between Spain and Portugal and the rest of Europe<--break->, as it has nearly one hundred miles of frontier with France. This strategic importance was underlined when Zaragoza, the regional capital, was chosen as the Expo City 2008 with the theme of “Water and Sustainable Development”.

Segovia forms part of the main route of the Camino de<--break-> Santiago de Madrid (an important pilgrimage also known as 'The Way of St James').

Girona (as it is known in catalan, or "Gerona" in Castillian spanish) is the capital of the eponymous province in the autonomous region of Catalonia, which has its origins in the Roman city of Gerunda. This so-called "City of Four Rivers" has an historic quarter dominated by medieval buildings with Roman, Arabic and Hebrew architectural influences including the Gerona Cathedral, the Jewish quarter and the houses of Onar. Archive of the Indies

The construction of this building began in the 16th century to be used by traders for their commercial transactions. In 1785, the premises became the headquarters for the General Archives of the Indies<--break->when structural changes were made to accomodate the numerous files and documents. The archives of the Indies contain references to Spain and her foreign possesions between the 15th and 19th centuries.

'Let us build a church so big that those who see it will think us mad', that is what the cathedral chapter decided in 1401 when the former mosque of Seville had to be knocked down. It is one of the last Spanish Gothic cathedrals, and the Renaissance style is already evident there. Its impressive size makes it the third largest in the Christian world, after Saint Peter's in Vatican city and Saint Paul's in London.

The Giralda tower

The Giralda is the most emblematic monument of Seville. This Minaret, 76m in height, originally was constructed by the Moors between 1184 and 1197. After the reconquest in 1568 the Christians fitted the minaret with the bell tower. As an emblem of Seville the Giralda forms an elegant and tall silhouette next to the Cathedral.

The Alcazar Palace (los Reales Alcazares) is definitly one of the most impressive monuments of Seville. You should not miss it when visiting the city! It is a fortified palace of which the construction was ordered by Abd Al Ramn III in the year 913. The Alcazar palace is considered World Heritage by UNESCO.

The Alhambra palace

The Alhambra was a palace, a citadel, fortress, and the home of the Nasrid sultans, high government officials, servants of the court and elite soldiers (from the 13th to the 14th century).

Today, it is the most visited site of Spain. The monument is divided into four main areas: the Palaces, the military zone or Alcazaba, the city or Medina and the agricultural estate of the Generalife. All of these areas are surrounded by woods, gardens and orchards.

The Cordoba Mosque (Mezquita)

The architecture of the Cordoba Mosque tells the history of a fascinating era which is unique. The mosque was built from 780, on the site of the Visigothic church of St-Vincent, and successively extended by the addition of new naves until 987 when it had its current dimensions.

After the Spanish reconquest, with the newly regained power in Córdoba, the Christians built a gothic cathedral in the heart of the mosque.

Just have a good time

Amongst flamenco dresses, plates of jamón serrano, manzanilla wine (sherry) and dancing Sevillanas (a specific version of the flamenco dance) the Feria is an ideal place for cordiality and friendship. 
The most important reason for going to the fair is just to have a good time with friends, enjoying it in a festive surrounding.

 

Semana Santa in Seville

Semana Santa (holy week - easter) has been one of the most important celebrations in Seville for centuries. It's origins may date as far back as the 14th century!
Dates 2016: March 20 - 27

During holy week the Cofradías (Brotherhoods or Fraternities) process in penitence through the, many narrow, streets of the city, from their church to the Cathedral for a sacred ritual and back, taking the shortest possible route, as decreed in the rule of the ordinances in the 17th century. In these processions they carry floats with the representations of Christ and Mary.

Many sevillians wait unpatiently for this yearly event, as they do for Seville's April Fair.

Los Caños de Meca

Los Caños de Meca is a truly cute and absurd tiny town with just one dead end street, that finishes right on the border of the small nature reserve of Acantilado y Pinar de Barbate. 

The town happens to be located on one of the last few unspoiled and most beautiful beaches of Europe at the Costa de la Luz.

Declared a Biosphere Reserve by Unesco, Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park is a special protection area for birds. It covers 51,695 hectares and is among the areas of greatest ecological importance in the south of the peninsula and therefore of great significance for Spain as a whole.
