Aan de populaire Costa del SOL, de kust van de provincie Malaga, liggen naast de gelijknamige hoofdstad ook veel bekende kleine plaatsen, elk met haar eigen stranden.
De Costa del SOL heeft een lange geschiedenis die 2.000 jaar geleden begon met de komst van de eerste zeevaarderes en handelaren, en altijd nauw verbonden is geweest met de zee. Oorspronkelijk zijn bijna alle plaatsen voormalige vissersdorpjes, die aan het begin van het massa tourisme vanaf de jaren vijftig een exponentiële groei hebben meegemaakt en die uiteindelijk samengegroeid zijn tot één van Spanje's belangrijkste vakantiegebieden. De Costa del Sol biedt stranden, terrassen, hotels, restaurants, bars, discotheken, pret- en waterparken, casinos, véél golfterreinen en de luxueuze sporthaven Puerto Banus van het excentrieke Marbella.

Natuurschoon en lieftallige dorpjes
Behalve het strand kun je op kleine afstand landinwaarts veel onverwacht natuurschoon en lieftallige, pitoresque Spaanse dorpjes vinden, die makkelijk te bezoeken zijn vanaf de Costa del Sol:
- Montes de Málaga, net ten noorden van Malaga zelf
- Het stadje Ronda en de omliggende Serranía de Ronda
- El Chorro of Desfiladero de los Gaitanes natuurpark
- El Torcal de Antequera natuurpark

Heading from Malaga City to the west you find the following towns on the Costa del SOL:
- Torremolinos is located just 12 kilometres to the west from the provincial capital Malaga, in the heart of the Costa del Sol and is since decades a very popular destination for beach holidays

- Manilva is surrounded by a sea of vineyards. It is 2 kilometres from the sea. Among its monuments, special mention should be made of Duquesa Castle, built to protect the coast from raids by pirates, and the 18th century Santa Ana Church...
Beyond Manilva you find the town of la Línea de la Concepción, Gibraltar (UK) and the port of Algeciras, which belong to the province of Cádiz. Although the are still on the Mediterranean coast, they officially do not belong to the Costa del SOL anymore.
Finally, at Tarifa, on the southern-most point of Spain and the southermost city of continental Europe, the Mediterranean sea merges into the Atlantic ocean and Costa del SOL converts to Costa de la Luz (the Coast of Light aka "the forgotten coast") which has a completely different character. The beaches and towns are still more in their original state and since it is not as exploited and massified, and you can still find many quiet and almost untouched beaches and bays.
To the east of Malaga City you find the towns of Rincón de la Victoria and Nerja.
Nerja can be found in the easternmost part of Axarquía, 50 kilometres from Malaga City and on the border of the province of Granada. Nerja, with a large choice of hotels, rooms, tourist villas etc. Offers a marvellous stay to visitors and an unequalled location for taking a holiday surrounded by mountains and beaches....
Beyond Nerja you reach the province of Granada and the Costa del SOL turns into the Costa Tropical (Tropical Coast).
